77.3kg and Why It Is Essential To Weigh Daily

February 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Today’s weight: 77.3kg

I intend to track my weight daily here. I always weigh at exactly the same time of the day - in the morning. This will give me as consistent condition as possible from day to day - ie, I’m not weighing in the morning on one day, and evening the next.

Some people recommend not weighing daily. I don’t quite understand the logic to that. Weighing myself daily in the morning ensures that I’m reminded daily of my weight goals - be it maintaining or losing weight - which helps keep focus.

Also, there is daily variation in our weight - we have healthy eating days and less-healthy eating days; we have days when we drink alcohol and when we don’t; we have days when we eat late and when we eat early. That variation can be half a kilo or more.

If I weigh myself daily, I can see the overall trend over the week. If I weigh myself weekly, I might weigh myself on a “light” day one week and a “heavy” day the next, resulting in me thinking the trend of my weight is up - whereas it could have been flat except for blips.

Similarly, I might weigh myself on a “light” day (eg, a day where I’m slightly more dehydrated than usual) and think that I can “relax” my watch a bit, only to get a shock the following week.

For focus on the task and being able to monitor my progress accurately, I think recording weight daily is essential and I would highly recommend it - especially at the times when I want to lose weight. Previously I used to record my weight on a calendar pinned by magnets to my fridge - what better place to put a reminder of my weight goals than on the fridge, eh? With the change in the year, I was slow to change over my calendar.

Now I’m recording it here and making it public, so that you can see exactly how my weight goes up and down, and what I do to correct it. Shared knowledge helps all.

My goal weight: 74-75kg
