Today’s weight: 77.8kg.
That’s up half a kilo from yesterday.
Am I worried?
No.
Here’s why:
Last night, some friends contacted me and asked if I wanted to meet, late.
One of the things I miss when living in Japan is meeting friends late at night. Japanese taxi fares are extortionate, so after leaving a concert or movie, the normal Japanese thought would be to head home rather than get a group of people together and go out further. It’s rare to meet on a weeknight at 10pm - and it’s something I really love doing. So I made the decision there and then to go out - which I knew meant eating close to midnight in a bar, and sleeping late.
And I was right. Food around 11pm, alcohol past midnight - home to bed at 2am, and getting up again at 7am… it’s no surprise that I’d be up in weight this morning. I still felt full from when I got up!
So why am I not worried?
Firstly, as I said yesterday, weight varies from day to day.
Secondly, after years of monitoring my weight daily, I know that while my weight is “up” today, it will be back down over the next few days - as long as I don’t do anything silly, like do the same thing again tonight.
Weight control is not about dieting - it’s about making lifestyle decisions that you can maintain easily for the rest of your life. Decisions that become habits.
In my life, I want to be able to go out and enjoy time with friends; I want to drink; I want to eat cakes. Over time, experimenting with choices and seeing how those choices affect my weight daily, I have learnt to understand my body, predict the effects my actions will have, and form a lifestyle which lets me enjoy what I want to do and keeps my weight. I don’t want a quick 1 week diet. I want a lifetime of a weight that I like.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so they say - we’ll see whether my knowledge of my body is as good as I think it is over this weekend. I’m putting my credibility on the line here, so I’d better be right!
