76.3kg - Handling Going Out

March 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Weight today: 76.3kg.

Back to 76.3kg today.

Tonight I’m going out. As yet, I don’t really know what the plan is - so I don’t know what I will eat.

As I said before, I don’t regard my weight control to be dieting. I regard it as finding a healthy lifestyle that I can maintain easily. That means I have to be able to go out, meet friends, and enjoy going out - as part of my lifestyle. How can I do that?

There are some basic common sense principles:

Firstly, I can’t do it every night. That is obvious. Just like I can’t get drunk every night, and I can’t live a life eating just cake, and I can’t just lie in bed all day with servants feeding me grapes - I can’t expect to be able to party it every night. I think it would be impossible to find a lifestyle which would allow me to go to the pub every night, for example. There’s no way to adopt a “Cheers” diet.

Secondly, I can prepare in advance. I know that tonight, I might be somewhere where there isn’t much or anything healthy I can eat. So I can have a perfect lunch. Or, I can eat healthily in advance of the meeting so that I don’t feel like eating much when I’m there. Today I had a perfect lunch.

Thirdly, I can choose as wisely as possible when I’m out. Depending on what sources you look at:

  • A pint of lager is 230 calories
  • A bottle of wine or champagne is about 500 calories.
  • 50ml (a double) of vodka is about 130 calories (that’s about 1900 calories per bottle).

It’s pretty easy for me to drink more than 4 pints of lager - much more difficult to drink two bottles of wine (but not impossible ;) ) If I’m entertaining at home, I’ll often mix red wine with a ice, soda water, and a dash of orange juice - it tastes delicious, and it makes a bottle of wine, and so the associated calories, go that much further.

I can also choose my food wisely. Would I like fish and chips, knowing that it’s probably not going to be cooked to perfection (certainly not in Tokyo), and is swimming with fatty lard? Do I want to be licking that lard with my tongue as it is going down my throat? Or would I be better choosing grilled chicken? If I eat something good, I’ll feel much better after eating.

Fourthly, I can be prepared for a weight increase the next day, and have a plan of action on how to handle it - a good lunch, and not having another big night out.

Let’s see what happens tonight.. and tomorrow.
