Today’s weight: 75.8kg
The blip of yesterday is over, and I’m back down more or less to the previous weight.
Last night I did go out, to a Japanese Izakaya (bar/restaurant). Despite choosing wisely from the menu, many things came back completely different from expected - the tofu with egg was not just tofu with egg, but tofu wrapped in beef with egg and beef sauce, for example.
In Britain, I’d send back the food if the description was wrong (like I did with a nan bread which came smeared in butter several years ago, only to have the restaurant owner argue with me that I should have asked for it without butter, even though butter wasn’t mentioned on the menu).
But In Japan, this is the kind of thing I have come to expect.
In non-tourist places, menus often have no English translation at all. When they do have translations, they are often incomplete or inaccurate. In this case, the Japanese descriptions were correct, but the English translations vague and incomplete.
I appreciate when any bar or restaurant in Japan tries to accommodate foreigners, so it’s not really something I wanted to raise an issue about. Instead, I decided to try the foods - as new experiences - but to make sure I didn’t eat to excess, because the foods were fattier than I’d like. Hopefully by doing so, I’ve minimised any long term impact on my “bottom line”.
At least the food was gorgeous.
