I actually went out to an Izakaya last night (Japanese bar/restaurant), so I wasn’t sure what to expect this morning. While I always try to choose sensible food (no deep-fried tempura, etc), what is received isn’t always as expected.
To handle going out, the approach I’ve developed is to ensure that I don’t go for the “full to bursting” feeling - recognising the level when I’ve eaten enough to be satisfied. Should I get hungry later, I can always eat some fruit, or soup when I get home.
This is an approach that is psychologically difficult to do at first. Our natural instinct is to see a meal as a unit, and eat the same amount whether healthy or not. We don’t naturally have the thought: “I’m in an unhealthy environment, so I’ll just eat enough to be satisfied now (or get by this now), and I can top-up later with something healthy.”
Today is the first warm weekend day of the year in Tokyo. While I’ve spent most of it getting my hair cut and cleaning, I now plan to go out for a walk in the park to take advantage of the nice weather, and get a little exercise.
